Our Organisation

The Youth Development Trust Wellington operates Stars and Project K programmes within the greater Wellington region.

PROJECT K: Youth development programme designed to inspire 13 – 15-year-olds to reach their potential through building self-confidence, promoting good health and education and teaching life skills such as goal setting and teamwork. The programme is based on leading research and is a catalyst for positive change and help equip young people so they can reach their potential. Evaluation of the Project K programme shows it works.

The unique Project K process was developed in 1995 by New Zealanders Graeme Dingle and Jo-anne Wilkinson in consultation with leading educationalists and youth workers. Project K is run in schools in 11 areas in New Zealand.

Some of the key skills, knowledge and attitudes the students take away with them are:
Self-awareness; Goal setting; Value of team work; Power of determination; Self-reliance; Outdoor skills; Sense of purpose
Life skills; Understanding how the community functions; Awareness of community resources and support services

STARS: Stars is a programme for all Year 9 students from a participating secondary school. In this programme teachers are Group Leaders and senior students are trained to be Peer Mentors.

The aims of the Stars programme are *To provide a range of skills that help Year 9 students succeed academically and socially.
*To provide a range of experiences that build self-confidence and communication skills in Year 9 students and peer mentors.
*To build friendships among peers, and between junior and senior students.
*To provide opportunities for Year 9 students and peer mentors to get to know teachers outside the classroom.
*To introduce Year 9 students to the benefits of goal setting, by setting and working towards academic, health and fitness, and personal goals.
*To encourage Year 9 students to adopt healthy behaviours, by providing information on the benefits of healthy eating, exercise, and the risks of peer pressure and substance use.
*To connect Year 9 students and peer mentors to their school community and increase perceptions of their school as a caring community.
*To increase the strength of community within the school, as perceived by school staff, students and their families.

KIWICAN is a lifeskills and values programme for primary and intermediate students. It aims to equip young New Zealanders with:
1. a sense of self-worth and self-confidence
2. the ability to take responsibility and be accountable for their actions
3. valuable life skills
4. A 'can-do' attitude
KiwiCan Leaders go into schools and deliver a high-energy and interactive lesson with physical, mental and creative challenges. Each lesson is based on a theme decided by the school.
