13/07/2010 GOOD RESPONSE TO QUEENSTOWN COMMUNITY AWARDS
Locals have got behind their volunteers with 17 groups nominated for the TrustPower Queenstown Lakes District Community Awards.

Nominations for the Awards closed on Friday (9 July 2010). The TrustPower Queenstown Lakes District Community Awards recognise and reward voluntary groups and organisations for the outstanding contribution they make to the local community. The Awards are run in conjunction with the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

TrustPower Community Relations Coordinator Pip Tschudin says a great variety of voluntary groups have been nominated for this year’s Awards.

“From PTA’s to RSA’s, animal clubs to garden clubs, this year’s TrustPower Queenstown Lakes District Community Awards are a true representation of the huge diversity of voluntary work going on in this community.

“It is fantastic that such a great range of volunteers are being recognised, celebrated and rewarded through this year’s TrustPower Community Awards,” says Mrs Tschudin.

The Awards cover five categories; Heritage and Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Sport and Leisure, and Educational and Child/Youth Development. The category winners receive $500 and runners-up receive $250.

The Supreme Winner will take home $1,500, a trophy, framed certificate and an all-expenses paid trip to the TrustPower National Community Awards. The 2010 TrustPower National Community Awards are being held in Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty districts in March 2011. The Supreme Winner will also receive a six month subscription to Fundraising in New Zealand magazine, New Zealand's only monthly publication dedicated to all things fundraising.

In addition, the voluntary group named Supreme Winner will be filmed by a TVNZ6 crew to star in the new TVNZ6 series Volunteer Power.

The nominations for the TrustPower Queenstown Lakes District Community Awards are currently being prepared for judging. The TrustPower Queenstown Lakes District Community Awards will be announced and presented at a function on Monday 16 August, to which all nominated organisations will be invited.
