The prestigious National event is the country’s biggest celebration of voluntary groups and organisations and is the highlight of TrustPower’s Community Awards calendar. The 2009 TrustPower National Community Awards is being held in the Nelson Tasman region from 12 – 14 March 2010.
TrustPower’s Community Awards programme is run in 25 regions around New Zealand in conjunction with local city and district Councils to recognise and reward the work of voluntary groups and organisations. Attending the National Community Awards will be representatives from each of the voluntary organisation’s named Supreme Winner at the regional Awards, along with the Mayor or a Council representative from each region.
Joining the regional teams will be a number of invited guests including Jim Mora from Radio New Zealand and Mucking In, Kerre Woodham from Newstalk ZB, Director of the Office for the Community and Voluntary Sector Alasdair Finnie, and Heather Clark from Volunteering New Zealand, all of whom are on the Independent Judging Panel for the National Awards.
Also on the Independent Judging Panel is Mick Lander from the Wairoa Community Development Trust, the organisation named Supreme Winner at the 2008 TrustPower National Community Awards. Hon Heather Roy, Minister of Consumer Affairs, is attending the Awards Dinner on Saturday 13 March.
TVNZ will also be filming at the Nationals for a new series to be screened on TVNZ 6 called Volunteer Power, which will tell the visionary stories of the projects and people recognised through the TrustPower Community Awards. Cameras start rolling for the new series at the National Community Awards, with the series due to start screening in May 2010.
Representing Nelson City and Tasman District at this year’s TrustPower National Community Awards is the Friends of Motueka Hospital Trust.
TrustPower Community Relations Coordinator Pip Tschudin says as well as recognising and promoting the work of volunteers, the TrustPower National Community Awards offer an opportunity to showcase the host district.
“We are delighted to be bringing this prestigious event to the Nelson Tasman region and we are doing all we can to showcase the region’s spectacular landscapes and culture,” says Mrs Tschudin.
Tasman District Mayor Richard Kempthorne says the TrustPower National Community Awards offers an excellent opportunity to promote the Nelson Tasman region.
“It is a pleasure to host the TrustPower National Community Awards and we hope that the participants enjoy our renowned hospitality and will come back and visit our fantastic region in the future,” says Mayor Kempthorne.
Nelson City Mayor Kerry Marshall says much of what is on offer in the Nelson Tasman region is driven by the hard work of a very large group of volunteers.
“The people who live here are committed to the communities they live in, and the pastimes and passions that make the region special. It is a great chance to showcase that at the TrustPower National Community Awards,” says Mayor Marshall.
Participants at the TrustPower National Community Awards will be going on a cruise through the Abel Tasman National Park as well as seeing the wonders of WOW, as the Awards night is being held at the World of Wearable Arts and Classic Cars Museum.
Each voluntary organisation attending the National Community Awards will give an 8 minute presentation on their organisation at a presentation and judging day being held at the Nelson School of Music on Saturday 13 March. The Awards Dinner is being held on the evening of Saturday 13 March at WOW, where the TrustPower National Community Awards Supreme Winner and Runner Up will be announced.
The TrustPower National Community Award Supreme Winner will receive a trophy, designed and sculpted by local ceramic artist Katie Gold, $2,500 prize money and a framed certificate. The Supreme Winner also takes home a $1,500 prize package from Foresee Communications, specialists in sponsorship and fundraising resources, training and advice.
