Nominations for the TrustPower Oamaru District Community Awards opened on Monday 1 March.
The Awards, which are run in conjunction with the Waitaki District Council, are open to all voluntary groups and organisations working to make Oamaru a better place to live.
Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton believes the Trustpower Awards provide significant recognition of the volunteers in our community and throughout New Zealand.
“We know how important volunteers are to every community and we are particularly proud of the strong base of support given by volunteers in Waitaki,” said Mayor Familton.
“Congratulations to the Multi-cultural group and the Katiki Penguin personnel who are representing our district at Nelson from 12th to the 14th of March. We are confident that they will represent us well.
“These awards are a brilliant constructive partnership between Trustpower and communities,” he said.
TrustPower Community Relations Representative Melanie Tavendale believes this is the perfect opportunity to thank those that give so much of their time to this community.
“Volunteers are the wheels that keep this community moving, and we need to make sure they know their efforts are very much appreciated,” said Mrs Tavendale.
“Taking a moment to nominate these groups for the TrustPower Community Awards takes so little time, but will really make their day,” she said.
Anyone can nominate a voluntary group for the Awards – groups can even nominate themselves. Last year 49 nominations were received for the TrustPower Oamaru Community Awards, but Mrs Tavendale believes there are many more voluntary groups out there who deserve recognition.
Since the TrustPower Oamaru Community Awards began in 2008, more than $11, 500 has been given away to deserving voluntary groups and organisations, this year a further $5, 250 is up for grabs.
The awards cover five categories; Heritage and Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Sport and Leisure, and Educational and Child/Youth Development. Category winners receive $500, runners-up receive $250 and the Supreme Winner will take home $1,500 and an all-expenses paid trip to the TrustPower National Community Awards.
Nomination Forms for the TrustPower Community Awards are available from the Council offices or service centre or can also be downloaded from www.trustpower.co.nz/communityawards. Nomination forms can also be received by texting the word ‘trust’ to 244, or you can call TrustPower Community Relations on 0800 87 11 11.
Nominations close on Friday 30 April.
The Supreme Winners of the 2009 TrustPower Oamaru and Waihemo Community Awards, the Waitaki Multicultural Council and the Katiki Point Penguin Charitable Trust will both be representing the Waitaki District at the 2009 TrustPower National Community Awards, being held in the Nelson/Tasman districts this month (12-14 March).
